Meet the Author

" Judy Bradbury is an author, award-winning literacy advocate and educator, and host of the popular Children’s Book Corner blog. She is also a Cayuga Island kid. Judy grew up on the island, which is located a few miles upstream from the mighty Niagara Falls. In the summers, she rode the bicycle her father built for her across the island searching for mysteries to solve. "

Meet the Illustrator

" I was born in Pisa, Italy, from a Brazilian mom and an Italian dad. With my heart already divided between two countries, I decided to add a third by falling in love with an American man and moving to the United States to be with him. I am now raising two beautiful multicultural boys that think, like me, that the world is after all a very small place. "

  1. Vivian Vande Velde

Likeable kids use their distinctive personalities and particular interests to solve mysteries. Good fun and gentle humor abound. Author Judy Bradbury subtly guides readers in how to research a subject of interest. Gabriella Vagnoli’s lively illustrations show that the children are as diverse as their interests.

  2. James Preller

Any book that begins with a map of an island is my kind of story. Enliven that setting with a diverse group of characters who are consistently kind—and bursting with curiosity—and you’ve got all the elements of a series that is alive with adventure, friendship, and mystery.

  3. margaret carey

Judy Bradbury introduces her readers to the Cayuga Island Kids, a diverse group of children ready for the adventures of summer vacation on the island. Their first quest is to find a dogwood tree, a tree that sounds like a barking dog when it’s branches are rubbed together. Along the way, the five children discover a mysterious object buried on their island. Is this object part of the history of Cayuga Island? The Kids enlist the help of their school librarian, a park volunteer, a college professor and an archaeologist to help them research, analyze the facts, and solve The Mystery of the Barking Branches and the Sunken Ship. Illustrations by Gabriella Vagnoli add detail and life to this fun summer adventure. This reader can’t wait to read the next book in the series, when author Judy Bradbury and illustrator Gabriella Vagnoli share The Adventures of the Big Fish by the Small Creek, Book Two in this fun new series.

  4. Children’s Literature

It’s summer and five friends (Lacey, Mac, Julian, Maya, and Yoko) on Cayuga Island are ready for some adventure. They are on the look out for a dogwood tree to listen if the branches in the wind sound like a dog barking. The group go to the park to search for the tree. During their hunt for the tree, they come across a round, ball-like object in the ground. This item initiates research to determine what it is and how it fits in with the local history. Gray-scale illustrations include a chart identifying each friend (and the helpful adults) along with a map of the Cayuga Island neighborhood. Readers may enjoy the author Bradbury’s notes on fact versus fiction at the back of the book. She grew up on Cayuga Island (near Niagara Falls). Teachers may find this book to be a way to demonstrate how an author weaves facts into a fictional story. In addition, pick up some handy tips about information investigation. This book is the first title in the Cayuga Island Kids series. Children who enjoy reading about adventures with friends will probably want to read this series.
