JOHNNY PAYNE is a novelist, playwright and poet. His other published novels include The Hard Side of the River, Second Chance, La Muerte de Papi and others. His produced plays include the musicals The Devil in Disputanta and The Serpent’s Lover. Other plays are the dark comedy Los Feliz and the neo-Shakespearean Cannibals. He directs the Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Los Angeles, California.

How do you reconcile a man capable of deep, tender love, a health reformer, assistant to the future British Prime Minister, and the son-in-law of a wealthy industrialist, but who kills in a blood rage? I’m told I have a philosopher’s mind, that I’m ambitious. Yet always there’s a downfall.
